In the notes to ltd company accounts relating to renumeration of employees, one of the items is "social security costs".....is this simply employER's national insurance?

Yes but you could stretch a point and put SMP or even SSP in there. It is most useful however for putting the directors' NICs in, so that the disclosed rem figure is the gross pay. It saves silly questions from the inspector. Frankly that is all that I would use it for. The ordinary e'ers NICs belong in the payroll costs imho.
