Breaking up a spreadsheet

Breaking up a spreadsheet

Didn't find your answer?

.. its 12 worksheets including 2 different pivot tables

is there an easy way of breaking it down into say 5 .xls files that can be transmitted by say saving worksheets as separate .xls files, will the links to the pivot go; can i use a macro?

(to big even after zipping)

Spreading Spreadsheet
I am presuming the reason you want to split it is to bypass restrictions on file sizes for email attachments. Split the file using winzip (or whatever you are using). The compression program should be able to split it into separate zip files that can be reassembled at the other end.

Try Filesplitter
There's a small shareware program 'out there' called filesplitter, which does exactly what you want - and can be set to automatically recreate at the other end. Search the web and you should find a download site easily enough.

How big?

You've not given any idea of the overall file size or whether the worksheets are interlinked. The problem could well be limitations set by your ISP's outgoing mail service.

For sheets that are not interlinked, one easy way is to copy them into separate spreadsheet files and send the individual files rather than the workbook containing all 12 worksheets. Then copy all the interlinked files into another workbook and send that.

Use "move or copy sheet" under the edit menu on your Excel toolbar. Don't forget to check the "create a copy" checkbox to avoid moving sheets to new workbooks. Delete unused sheets in workbooks to reduce the overall file size.

Avoid using a macro if you can as that will bring in complications and opportunities for virus infection.

Final point - do make sure that the receiving end can accept .xls files. A increasing number of business network antivirus systems filter them out together with quite a few other everyday use file formats. We've also found this on WinZip compressed files and on PDF files in recent months.

The S P R E A D -sheet that grew too big!
Nicholas
How are you trying to send it by e-mail? copy & paste? Have you tried sending it as an attachment? It shouldnt be that big that a zipped attachment is beyond your machine's capabilities, unless your on board memory is fairly tight.
If you do have to split it up and as it is 12 worksheets, maybe breaking it up into 6 rather than 5 files may be easier to work with. You may even get away with splitting it into 2.
You should then be able to attach both files to the one email.
