Can anyone recommend a wide screen for a PC?

Didn't find your answer?

My eyes hurt from my screen (19" flat screen) it is set on resolution 1280 x 1024 32 bit, and I have an Nvidia Gforce 6800 LE graphics card. I have messed around with contrast and brightness and wonder if a different screen might make a difference.

Any ideas?

Thank you very much for all your suggestions.
I am going to try some different coatings on my glasses, I have also changed my screen contrast and brought in additional day light lamps and made sure that since I wrote the query I have regular breaks from "the screen".

What I really need is a week or two of no reading or computers - roll on 1st Feb.

Other - cheaper options

Sit slightly further away from the screen. Does this help?

I wear contact lens and as I have got older so my sight has changed. My optician suggestede that I get some cheap glasses that correct near sight and stopped my headaches. In the UK they were £19.99 (I think you can buy them over the counter in boots and I have seen them in Woolworths) The last set I bought was in a Tenerife Market at 6 euro.

Accessibility
Hi,

As it's been recommended try switching to 1024 by 768 for the screen resolution (this will make things bigger).

You could also try changing your windows settings. Assuming that you have windows up to XP (not sure about Vista):
* right click on your desktop
* select properties
* then the appearance tab of the popup window
* change the font size to large (3rd drop down)
* click the effect button on the right hand side
* try playing around with some of the settings in there - like clearType, bigger icons etc...

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards

Also

have you tried using MS ClearType Tuner to help sharpen fonts.

Accessibility options
Hi

If you want larger icons & text on your toolbars you can use the accesibility options in the control panel - I do because it makes life easier & there's nothing wrong with my eyesight!

A lot of my visually impaired clients also use the high resolution options. You can use anything from white text on a black background to tweaking the colour of your background slightly. Many people find that changing a white background to one with a hint of grey 'softens' the screen (black on white is the harshest possible combination for eyes to adjust to so I've no idea why we use it..)

Also, whilst in a program such as excel don't forget the Zoom function where you can change the % zoom; just moving from 100% to 120% makes a huge difference (you can't see as many cells per screen though so you will need to work out your own compromise) On a larger screen you can effectivley use a smaller zoom & fit more cells in at the same 'real' size so yes a larger screen can help, but try the freebie functions first!

If you want help using these functions I'm on [email protected]

Change screen settings
As has already been mentioned if it's the size of text icons that's the problem then you can change the screen resolution.

Personally I have no problems with either 1014 or 1280 screen resolution.

A further setting is the refresh (flicker) rate (expressed in Hz).

To change the refresh rate :-

Right click on desktop.
Click on tab "Settings"
Click on button "advanced"
Click on tab "monitor"
then try one of the several options,.typically in the range 60Hz to 85Hz to see which one suits you best.

What do you need?
If everything on the screen is too small you can simply change the resolution, eg. 1024 x 768, or buy a bigger screen. Alternatively you could look at a dual monitor setup, which would probably be cheaper than buying a single 22" or 24" monitor.

I am not being facetious, but...
have you had your eyes tested recently?

I only ask because my eyesight started to deteriorate with extended computer use and I began wearing specs.

There are filters you can have built in to your glasses which help with this, plus I think you can still get those filters that go over your screen.

Hope this helps.

Edit -

I have just had a look and you CAN get Anti glare filters to fit a TFT screen.
