Can I legally withold documents and information

Didn't find your answer?

He had not submitted tax returns for 5 years and when I filed them in Jan this year and he subsequently received a £20k tax bill, he is now trying to make out that they can't be correct and wants a second opinion.
I have no problem with another accountant checking the work etc but the client has unpaid fees outstanding. Am I within my rights to withold documents (both clients and my own papers). He says "HMRC have agreed to more time for an independant review but that my not releasing documents will result in defaulting on the tax return deadline".
Is this my problem or not!?
Any advise would be most appreciated.
Diane
