Caravans

Caravans

Didn't find your answer?

My client has purchased a caravan for him to spend 2 - 3 nights a week in for when commuting to and from his home and the place where he consults, is too far.

I wouldn't claim for the caravan as I have read that it was "not purchased for the purpose of the trade". However the client has spoken to another accountant (charming!) who said if he had a flat in London he would be able to claim for that, so the caravan can be claimed in the same way. I still don't think client can claim for it. If he stayed in a B & B he could, though!

Any advice would be appreciated, please!

Many thanks

Yes

I'm assuming your client is a sole trader. I also have a client who purchased a caravan for using when he cannot commute and needs to stay away for a length of time. I discussed the matter with HMRC who were happy that I went ahead and claimed capital allowances, apportioned for any private use. There is actually information relating to this on the HMRC website but I cannot remember what the reference is.

It needs to be for the purpose of the trade, which in my clients case it was, and it sound as though it is in yours. (It also needs to be movable (not a static))
