Some suggestions
Microsoft Visio is very good.

Vector graphics programs such as Macromedia Freehand or CorelDraw have some charting facilities.

There are some very good Java things around. See for instance:

That is fearsomely expensive, though. There is certainly some shareware or freeware around of this type if you are happy with Java. (I have something somewhere that might do if you are interested.)

If you don't like Java there are various things for Perl, ASP, PHP etc. See for instance

http://www.advsofteng.com/product.html (where there is a free download).

What is it that Excel fails to do?
If you let us know what it is that you want to do but can't do in Excel, we may be able to help. There are some add-ins for Excel that may bridge the gap.

Add ins do all sorts
Anyone can write an add-in for Excel to do almost anything. Many are available on the web, sometimes for free, sometimes at a cost.

I can't be any more specific.

What do you want to do?
