CPD strategy

CPD strategy

Didn't find your answer?

I am finding some of the information posted on Accountingweb very helpful and interesting. Does time spent reading the articles or posting answers count as CPD for ICAEW, ACCA, ICS, AIA etc.

I really need some CPD pretty fast but I don't have the time or money to go on a course.

Any answers will be greatly appreciated.

Ken

If you post your comments direct to AIA CEO, you won't know if he appreciates your criticisms or not.

If you post your criticisms into aiaworldwide.com, you are guaranteed that your posting would turned 'invisible' after it has been visible earlier. I remembered one regular useful contributor's remarks in this forum and I am just repeating it in a more humorous manner, ie.

Good suggestion - please read
If readers of AIA threads do not comment or further criticise, then this is good news to AIA.

If AIA readers has further comments to write on, they can either post their comments to the respective AIA threads or post them to the AIA CEO.

I am sure the CEO would appreciate your comments and can this fall under STRUCTURED CPD?

Please take time off to watch the series Apprentice. Then, you will know what I mean and how far an ambitious person can go and take on further responsibilities.

Neil M, allow me to reply......
...I would advise AIA members not to write in their CPD records that they read AIA threads here and claim unstructured CPD hours.

Their CEO reads and write in this forum and he knows what people are writing and if he finds out an AIA member's CPD records CPD hours reading AIA threads in this forum, what else do you think, Neil M.

Good to hear independent advise from people like you, Neil M and especially Wally N.

ANOTHER AIA
Another AIA (QA) "Do you think there would still be full support then for the AIA?"

I have not included AIA as part of my cpd unstructured units as I have completed structured 40 Units for this year. So I wouldn't know. What do you think? What is your opinion?

If anyone reads AIA threads here, everyone knows that there are a lot of contributors who wrote "against" AIA. Those having read the postings here know a lot.

Then, those "unstructured" CPD hours reading and digesting AIA threads here could mean a lot to the support of AIA. Especially, those members after reading these threads. Do you think there would still be full support then for the AIA?

CPD
Ken

Here is a link to icaew's website regarding the cpd. Freddy already commented on cpd's requirement. For the completeness here is a link to cpd guide from ICAEW. AAT follows the same rules while ACCA has different rules.

ICAEW CPD requirements
Ken

Until 2004 members of ICAEW where required to complete a set number of hours of structured and non-structured CPE (Continuing Professional Education).

Since the introduction of CPD in 2005, there is no set number of hours that members are required to complete. Each member uses his/her professional judgement to decide what they need to learn to fulfil their responsibilities and other people's expectations. Each member is also required to determine how they are going to go about acquiring this knowledge.

As Stomrider points out below, there is no need to go on courses just for the notes, snooze in the back row and go home at tea break with no intention of doing anything other than ticking the CPD box. If you don’t think going on courses or attending conferences offers the most effective means of achieving your goal there is no need to make them part of your CPD strategy. You may instead opt to read books or journals, visit accountingweb or other professional websites or arrange an informal training session with a colleague who can teach you what you need to know.

Every year between 1 November and 31 January members are required to verify that they have completed the CPD process for the previous year.

Hope this helps

It's for ICAEW but I don't think there are major differences between the professional bodies with regards to what counts towards CPD, are there?

Neil M, reading aia articles
What do you think could happen if I write down all the AIA threads as unstructured CPD hours in my reports?

courses
I feel that courses are invaluable because i attend lexis nexis courses and always learn something of relevance.

I am always amazed at how often people just turn up for the notes, snooze in the back row and go home at tea break with no intention of doing anything other than ticking the cpd box.

ICAEW new approach to cpd should remove this irony?

Yes, they do count towards non-structual cpd. As reading and networking will help you gain some knowledge which was not planned to gain (ACCA & AAT).

Verifiable and non-verifiable CPD

To make it clear there's a difference between verifiable and non-verifiable CPD.

Reading posts etc on accounting web is CPD but it's non-verifiable.

For certain accounting bodies such as the ACCA you also need to undertake verifiable CPD. This can include attending a course like some of the posters have noted. ACCA members, for example, have to complete 21 hours of verifiable CPD annually.

More recently some training providers have started offerering online CPD, which can count towards verifiable CPD.

Financial Fluency  offers a wide range of online CPD courses.

So if like Ken if you need CPD fast and don't have the time or money to go on a traditional training course why not try CPD via e-learning.  You'll be surprised how much more effective it can be than sitting at the back of a classroom.

There's free demos on the financial fluency website so you can see what it's like first.
