Declaring Capital gain with no NI number

Declaring Capital gain with no NI number

Didn't find your answer?

The wife of a client has sold a property on which she is liable to capital gains tax. She hasn't worked for 30 years, and is not sure of her NI number.

1) how can we go about finding our the NI number
2) do we then need to register her for self-assessment for a one-off return? Or is there another route to declaring this income? She obviously is not registered with a tax office.

Job Centre Plus
The best starting point would be her local Job Centre Plus. If she explains that she has lost her number, they will be able to help.

Capital gains can often be declared on an R40 but if R40 is not appropriate, wait until NI number is obtained and then write to local tax office with brief details of asset, proceeds and amount of gain and they will advise whether SA return will be issued or not. If proceeds were more than £36K, SA return is likely to be issued.
