DIY Accounting

DIY Accounting

Didn't find your answer?

I am looking at setting up a small private practice and for the initial period, during the proof of concept phase, wish to limit my expenses.
Software is likely to be the most expensive aspect of this phase and whilst I can full well see the necessity, once the business is up and running for using VT, PTP or IRIS etc, I would like to start off (first 5 clients or so) on a bit of a shoestring.

With this in mind I have recently come across DIYAccounting.co.uk which appears to be a remarkably cheap bit of kit but also appears to do what I am after. Its also been built by a qualified accountant who I guess uses it with his clients

Has anyone else out there had any experience with it? I would be interested to hear what others experiences have been

Many thanks
Ga

company formations
Hi,
I did join up with DIY Tax Accounting to set up a new company formations. Unfortunately part way through I found another company which was easier to use and submitted online so very quick to form (Company Wizard). I am quite a novice to this area of work and yet was able to declare online, receive emails direct from Company Wizard I was able to send to my customer and for a small fee had the originals posted.

If you require company formations I certainly would recomment Company Wizard, the website is www.company-wizard.co.uk.

If you contact them and could mention recommended by complete Book-Keeping Ltd it would be much appreciated.
(or edit copy link) http://www.company-wizard.co.uk/includes/linkIn.aspx?refID=A0198&prodID=00' target='blank'>http://www.company-wizard.co.uk/Images/banners/comWiz-468-60-1.gif' width='468' height='60' border='0' alt='Company Formation'>.

Unfortunately, this is the only area I tried using DIY Tax Accounting. Sorry cannot be much more use.

not as cheap as you think
I was looking at several packages and I really liked the look of this one. However, it is all based on excel spreadsheets and when I looked into it futher you have to buy a new one each year!

I have benn looking as TAS books Basic and Microsift Accounting Express which are both FREE.

Tas only allows one company and is very basic as it says. Microsoft is a lot bigger (500MB) and can sometines be a bit wieldy. But it allows multiple companies.

I need to account for flat rate VAT which none of the smaller packages seem to deal with properly but that can be worked around. Also Tas has a fixed 12 period year which cannot be shortened or lengthened so I ahve opted for Microsoft Accounting Express.

Hope that helps

DIY
Although we've not used the DIY Accounting templates ourselves, I have heard a few that find them easy to use and sufficient.

I've not heard from accountants that have used it, as it is geared towards businesses that do their own but I don't see why it couldn't be a low cost solution for practice.

Unless it's changed since I last looked, it's sold for single year end (one month in a given year) but have a word with Terry Cartwright and see as he might have a package for accountants.

I'd be interested to hear back if he does have such a package if you find out.

Another thing which might be worth a look at is e-conomic online software, as you can use this for your own accounts for free and there's no accountant costs at all - so an easy decision to make giving you a package at your finger tips without the expense.

Looks interesting
I am also in your situation, just starting up and initially looking to keep costs down. I have been onto the DIY accounting website which looks interesting, previously I was looking at going with VT.

I know I haven't answered your question but I will look into this and maybe let you know if I proceed with DIY accounting and also advise how I get on.

DIY Accounting

Don't go there unless you can avoid your client working on it at period end.

My client insists on posting sales receipts against the original invoice which distorts the closing debtors.

A useful tool if you can control it but a mammoth task to backtrack and establish closing debtors/creditors.  DIY Accounting's answer to the period end question is to "Stop your client tinkering with it" - not helpful.
