Does anyone know what kind of virus is this?

Does anyone know what kind of virus is this?

Didn't find your answer?

I received an e-mail from a friend on one of the headings that I sent to him weeks ago.

When I opened it, it has no message, just a file attached. Stupidly I downloaded it and a file "something".pif was downloaded. It has an the MS Dos prompt icon and when I doubleclick this file it brought up the dos window at c:\ and the file then vanished. I phone the friend who sent it and it said he received the same file from Italy and did not send anyfile to anyone and is received a lot of refused sent e-mail saying that his mail has a virus.

Question is:
1. What kind of virus is this? My computer is still working normally.

2. Which antivirus software should I purchase to get rid of it.

Thank you in advance for your help.
James

You don't need to buy to find out what it is

Connect to www.symantec.com and follow the link to the AntiVirus Research Center. Type the file name into the search box and read the results. If nothing is shown, follow the link to the hoaxes section and see if you can find it listed.

You can download Norton Antivirus 2002 online direct from Symantec or download it online from other sources such as www.jungle.com (successor to the Software Warehouse download shop).

If you are not running any antivirus software you are running major risks these days. The badtrans virus is spreading rapidly. Norton AV 2002 checks both incoming and outgoing Email.

Caution needed in these cases.
Double clicking on a mystery file that you recieved in an email unexpectedly , is a little foolish. The majority of email worms are harmless until manually activated and rely on the end user running them in some way. Best to just delete any unsolicited email attachments you recieve.
