Employing someone

Employing someone

Didn't find your answer?

A builder client needs some help from time to time.
He has just started out so cannot predict when he will need someone. He needs basically a labourer type person.
He is considering employing a young relative who he could train up who is currently unemployed.
What is the best way to do this.
He does not want to go along the subcontractor CIS route (I think that he beleives the relative could not cope with the paperwork), but just wants to employ him as and when required.
Also, are there grants available to take someone off unemployment benefit?

Employed
If he wants to employ the young relative and does not want to engage him as a sub-contractor, your client has no option but to employ him and operate the PAYE procedure of issuing him with a P46. Assuming that the lad ticks Box B or, better still, Box A, the P46 does not have to be submitted to the Revenue unless his pay exceeds the NI LEL of £87 a week or £377 a month and your client would not even need a PAYE scheme.

If the lad is earning more than this, then your client will have to register for a PAYE scheme, make deductions if required and pay them over to the Revenue once a quarter with his employer's NIC, issue payslips and file a P35 & P14 at the end of the tax year.

I thought unemployment benefit had been replaced by Jobseeker's Allowance, but I have no idea about any grants that might be available. Nor do I know what level of pay or frequency of casual work might be allowed while still claiming the Jobseeker's Allowance. It could be complicated if your client can only offer odd weeks of employment.
