Enquiry letter

Enquiry letter

Didn't find your answer?

Client showed around 15k profit in 02/03 from a pub that is going downhill.

Revenue have had all records and client is stressed out, getting ill over trying to get rid of the pub and after telling them where to get off with an interview they've now sent a letter asking all manner of the interview questions and really it's beyond belief. They want to know everything and client is in a right state. Can anything be done?

Try standing back
It might be worth you trying to work out why HMRC are being so aggressive. Is there something that may have given rise to suspicions? I had a case where the client had suddenly opened a number of bank accounts. From HMRC point of view, this is highly suspicious. The explanation was that he was acting as executor for two relatives who died recently. I explained this to HMRC. They did not back off immediately, but they did so earlier than would otherwise have been the case. Other points which arouse suspicions: swimming pool in garden and flash new cars. If anything like this applies in your case, tell HMRC and explain how the purchase was funded.
