Formula linking workbooks

Formula linking workbooks

Didn't find your answer?

I have a problem with the 'corruption' of formula linking one or more workbooks to another when saving them to a different location
For example, I set up a formula linking one workbook to another, save the files & everything is fine.
I then copy the files to another location (say PC to CD to a client's PC or via email to the client). When the workbooks are opened in their new home, the formula link doesn't work because the 'host' workbook is still looking in the old location for the link.
What is the best way to set up formula to ensure workbooks still link when taken or sent to a new location?

Findlink
I think what you're trying to do would require your client's machine to link to information on your server, which although I'm no IT expert sounds like a security nightmare.

You could try removing links using a tool like findlink.xla (http://www.oaltd.co.uk/) to ensure that the spreadsheet does not link when you send it out, without pasting as values.

Would it be possible to include all the workings within one workbook to avoid the problem?

Only way
The only way you can avoid this problem is to make sure all linked workbooks are in the same folder. It doesn't matter which folder because Excel won't save the path information for workbooks that share the same folder. So if you have them in C:\MyDocuments\ExcelFiles on one machine and you load then into H:\FileRepository on another the links will still work.

Not sure if I've explained that very well!

Hi Neil
On the contrary, I understand fully & thanks very much for that.
Trouble is, I thought that's what I was doing but obviously not. So' it's off for another go!
Thanks again for taking the trouble to reply.
