General Tax Book

I have tried and failed to find a book that will answer questions on VAT, income and corporation tax queries. From basic issues such as whether VAT is claimable on a certain expense, to how to account for a bonus in the form of a Balloon Trip, to the tax consequences of selling a subidiary.
Anyone know of a suitable option that is not in a Tolleys style format?
