GPS for Laptops

GPS for Laptops

Didn't find your answer?

I have been considering getting GPS installed on my laptop.

I have found external USB kits, some like a mouse, others like a USB flash drive or CF connections.

Is it possible to install GPS inside the laptop?

MS Streets and Trips
I am travelling by car in the USA next month and plan on buying MS Streets and Trips ($74.95) on arrival. This comes complete with a GPS device connected via USB, so that you simply plug it into your laptop and go (according to the advertising). The implication of Mike's comment is that there is nothing similarly cheap and simple available for the UK/Europe. Is this really so?

PCMCIA or bluetooth
David,

you can get a PCMCIA GPS card for about £100 or so, but this would normally need some sort of arial to help it receive the signal in poorer reception areas, ie under trees by tall buildings etc.

You can get a bluetooth GPS transponder that would need it's own power supply, but would wirelessly connect to the laptop if you are worried about wires, which I guess you are. Same sort of cost as the above.

You'd then need an application to make sense of the inputs, anything from £40 for a basic navigator up to several hundred for something that talked to a 3D mapping product.

What were you planning to use it for, as which ever you buy, it's probably not going to be as good, convenient, cheap or accurate as something purpose built for the job like a £100 satnav from Halfords. Hope that helps, Mike
