HMRC and Data Protection

HMRC and Data Protection

Didn't find your answer?

I have written to HMRC and told them I no longer act for a client.

They are still sending me copies of his statements of account.

Are HMRC breaking the Data Protection laws in this case?

If so can I use that as a tactic to stop them sending me what is, in effect, junk mail ?

Halifax
A few years ago my client mislaid some visa statements from the Halifax. He asked the Halifax to send them to me directly. I started to receive the current statements monthly, he had a very high unpaid account. I did not want my credit rating affected by this action ( I work from home) I tried to contact the Halifax to stop these statements coming to me. I was told that they could not even talk to me as they could not pass private details to me. I explained I had the statements and had all the personal details I could handle. They would still not talk to me and still continued to send the statements. Eventually the client stopped them. So much for data protection.

You too..
I have found that using the Agents On-Line service is very efficient in proventing this - I do appreciate that the client may not be listed.

How about some one from HMRC comming up with a foolproof solution.

Unauthorised information
I have my own tax advisory business, looking after the tax affairs of companies and individuals. I have never submitted a 64-8 for myself, as I am not a client of my own firm (why on earth would I even need to be), however HMRC keep sending agent copies of my tax codes to my firm!!

I have tried to stop them advising HMRC that they have no authority to send them but they just keep arriving.
