HMRC theft?

HMRC theft?

Didn't find your answer?

Client has arrears of SA personal tax. He has just phoned to say that £3,000+ has been taken out his bank account. Bank say "off the record" that it was the Revenue for personal tax. Bank say they are "not allowed" to say what for or on what legal authority.

Am I wrong to think that the Revenue can't do this without any warning or communication to the client? Don't know if it makes any difference but for the legally inclined we are in Scotland.

Help!
Ian

Warning
I am sure your client will have had plenty of warning but hasn't done anything about it. You have to ask if he had £3000 in his bank account why he hadn't paid the self-assessment tax due? HMRC don't take money out of bank accounts unless they've been chasing for a long time!

What do HMRC say?
Or are you / the client disinclined to contact them?
