How do I achieve XBRL tagging in my CT600?
I have 2 limited companies, and filed online CT600 returns for both earlier this month.
Both were rejected as the pdf accounts attached did not have XBRL tagging. However, neither CT office could tell me anything about XBRL other than "we are as much in the dark about this as you"!! I was referred to the online help desk who, after a 31 minute call wait, told me that XBRL tagging would occur automatically when I filed online. I spoke to a senior manager at one of the CT offices, who told me that I should file my CT600 WITHOUT attaching accounts. I tried to do this, but the online submission would not work without them.
It seems that no one at HMRC has a clue about this requirement, but as the XBRL failure comes up on an automated checklist they merrily delete the CT600 that you have filed online & write to say you are in default, meaning you have to do the whole thing again "although the same thing will probably happen"!!
How can I achieve a compliant online CT600 submission with XBRL tagging? I do not see why I should be forced to buy a commercial accounting or XBRL system just because it helps HMRC. I use manual accounting as the companies are small and have few entries. Along with the plethora of other forms and submissions I have to make the whole situation has gone beyond a joke... P35's, CT600, P11D's, oh and my VAT return is now due!!!
IXRL Tagging
Don't panic. I only have a few limited company clients and didn't want to buy any sotware or pay the extortionate fees for tagging by an outside company. You can use the Accounts service in the CT600 when using the HMRC sotware but have to type the P&L, Balance sheets and notes into their system. I little more time consuming but you get there in the end.
XBRL - the latest time demand from HMRC & the most ill-considere
I've already spent hours filing & re-filing so will give that a go - I did enter the abbreviated accounts for one of the companies & it still failed the xbrl test. Someone needs to speak on behalf of small businesses - 12 hour days & then we have to put up with endless filing requirements. Interesting point - if one were to emigrate which country has the least oppressive tax regime?!
Hmm...
Somalia perhaps!

XBRL Tagging
I agree with you, i have tried to call them to find out exactly what this is and no one seems to know really what you need to do !!! also when you get to the end of the CT600 and attach documents it does say in EITHER PDF or XBRL tagging, so the PDF should be accepted !!...but when i spoke to them about this they said it was there mistake and it shouldn't say that !!, to be honest is that really our problem it does clearly say you can submit the documents in either format so it should be accepted !!!...HMRC do my head in big time they are a law unto them selfs and change the goal post when it suits them !! They say there was a link in the letter that tells you all about what you need to do, i went on the this site and it just says that the documents have to be submitted in the tagging not how to do it !!
I am a small business too and dont see why i have to spend loads of money for soft wear that has to be used once a year !!
solution
yes it is misleading that you are given the option to attach pdf accounts which are then rejected!
Alison's reply above hits the spot - I entered the balance sheet & p&L figut=res, relevant notes etc into the HMRC system & this time it went through. Time consuming, yes, but gets the job done at the expense of another late night. VAT return next...
XBRL Tagging
What a nightmare! Another legacy handed down by the last Labour Govt! I have a small company and have spent to date about 20 hours over a period of 3 weeks trying to submit the CT600. I have phoned the help desk (on a 0845 number which costs 12.5p per minute) on 4 or 5 occasions. Like 'quadra' I also filed the accounts in a PDF format and have had the return rejected. HMRC's rejection letter states 'and I have removed everything from our system for this period and you will need to file the whole return again to fulfill your obligation to deliver a return''! I can imagine the author of the letter going 'Tee Hee - that's going to waste several other hours of your time'! I spoke to CT Operations in Dundee how I could download XBRL tagging and they did not have a clue how to do so or how one submits the return in XBRL format.
The HMRC website invites one to download a document 'Filing your Company Tax Returns online - a beginner's guide' - 31 pages of it! Another half day wasted! And all to no avail as the PDF submission is rejected anyway!
Another HMRC advisor who was unable to help told me that he gets about 20 calls a day - must take up all his time!
The Govt says it is doing all it can to assist small businesses. I dread to think of the numbers that will clog up HMRC just before the submission deadline.
I intend to write to Vince Cable and make him aware of this situation which will cost the taxpayer and small businesses thousands of pounds. It would be good if all the others who have contributed on your website does the same.
It is also about time HMRC has 01, 02 and 03 telephone numbers so that the public are not charged 12.5 p per minute waiting for calls to be answered!
iXBRL managed tagging services
Well if you are trying to use the CT600 with the HMRC, you will need to attach the accounts and the tax computations that are in iXBRL format. If this does not work, you will need to buy commercial CT600 software.
If you are looking to outsource tagging of your financial statements and tax computations, you could consider using our online pay-as-you-go website service. Do visit our website www.datatracks.co.uk for more information.

Unfair?
Basically you either need software that will produce XBRL files or you need to find someone who has it and will file the accounts on your behalf. I'm not aware that you can manually create an XBRL tagged file.
