IE7 and HMRC site

IE7 and HMRC site

Didn't find your answer?

Internet Explorer 7 has been released today. I've put IE7 on one of my PCs to see how it works with the common sites I use. And the only one I've come across so far that falls over is the HMRC front page.

Anybody else braved the new world yet?

Firefox
Since at least some of these sites (e.g. HMRC) seem to work OK with Firefox, it might be a good idea to download and install it even if you don't intend to make it your browser of choice. Then at least you have a fall-back option - but to be sure you're OK, make sure your critical websites work with Firefox prior to installing IE7.

Firefox replica
I am downloading IE7 as I type this, so obviously have not yet installed it, but from the screenshots on the Microsoft website, it looks like a straight copy of Firefox. Why bother with the replica when you can get the real thing for free?

Not as unique as you may think
It would appear that it is Government sponsored systems that have the problem. In the NHS, the Choose and Book system (which enables GPs to Choose and Book (!) appointments for referring patients into hospital care also will not work with IE7, neither will the Electronic Prescribing project (just under trial at the moment). GPs have been told not to download the program (although as it is being patched down as a critical update by Microsoft next month, you can guarantee that hundreds will do it by mistake, not realising what they are downloading).

This begs the question, does everyone here check the updates that are automatically downloaded? If not I suggest you do so as you can guarantee that you will not be able to access the online services and everything will grind to a halt. So much for progress.

I wonder if it will be solved in time for the year end submissions....

IE7 - Not
I had a similar problem. As soon as I upgraded the keyboard went haywire. When I typed @ I got ", when I typed £ I got ' - and so it went on.
To add insult to injury I had to pay £35 plus VAT to Microsoft for then to look at the problem. Turns out that the program changed the keyboard loayout from Keyboard UK to Keyboard USA and a visit to Control Panel, Regional & Languages, etc solved the problem.
The other issue caused is that Word and Excel now load SR-1 Premium update each time the programme is started.
But that is addressed by another department!!!!
Now to try and get my £35 plus VAT back.
Wish me luck.

ie7
On the ie7 home page in Microsoft.com there is useful info about a whole range of compatibility issues including web pages and applications affected. There is a useful tool that will spoof a web site into thinking your ie7 browser is ie6, cutely called "User Agent String Utility"

I use HP Director, et al, for image management, scanning, photo's, etc.. It is well documented that ie7 stops HP Director running visibly. There is a workaround using Alt+space etc., but you have to wonder....why?
