I'm looking to impress the Business Owner! Any...

Didn't find your answer?

This is rather a loose question, but I have spent rather a long time being bogged down in the detail in an FC type role. My MD is now looking to move me into a more strategic role, and it is a little daunting to say the least as now I am going to have to start thinking less about spreadsheets and more about reality!!

I would like to identify a couple of areas which to start working on, in order to improve the company's strength and position and prove my worth in my new role.

I of course have several ideas of my own of areas that need working on, and plenty to keep me busy, but I wondered if anyone new of any hot topics that will actually interest an Business Owner (most important) who is naturally only really interseted in the big picture and what is going to make his company thrive and make him richer!

Any ideas welcome, the industry is construction.

Many thanks.

Steve Tees
Rather than "What was the last commentator on?", I rather asked WHO was the last commentator?

Phantom AWeber, I guess. Very amusing and creative too.

Maybe, more would phantomise this thread to come.

Cost Control
I note you are moving from spreadsheets, which implies you are not using an integrated construction system. Yes, I am self-promoting, but one of your projects could be getting a proper system in. A fully integrated construction business management system will benefit your boss's business by increasing cost control, saving time entering into spreadsheets and provide him with the instant reporting he needs. Getting a system that is able to grow with your business and be in the latest technology in the future is essential.

Try benchmarking
Benchmarking is a really good way of comparing how your business is doing compared to others.

You can get standard benchmarking reports expensively from various sources but I bet you know who your competitors are and who you want to be like. Get their accounts from Companies House and start comparing yourself to them. You can clearly see profit margin but there are so many other analyses that you can do - how long do they take to collect debtors, how long to pay suppliers (and if longer than you should you delay payments or try to arrange bigger discounts for your good payment record and so on).

Also a good idea to keep an eye on the industry and local press so that you get a feel for what your market is doing (and that of your customers).

Head
There is an obvious opportunity in your business sector.

Get ahead of the game by being prepared for the new CIS regulations. These don't come in until 2007 (postponed from April 2006) but it would be great to be ready a year in advance.

Decide on who you want to employ and who you want to engage as subbies and get proper contracts in place. You will need specialist help from somebody like Bauer and Cottrell http://www.bauerandcottrell.co.uk

Bauer and Cottrell are two very clever ladies who will be able to give you plenty of information with which to frighten your boss into agreeing with you.

'Basic foundation' very important
Employ seismologist, place a couple pet animals (animals is known to be able to sense earthquake), astrologers (they predict very well), psychic (they foretell with acuracy), feng shui masters (they ensure a balance of the 5 elements - air, wind, water, wood and fire elements), yogi men (they can train all construction men to be very strong using energy).
