International ISPs

International ISPs

Didn't find your answer?

Does anyone have experience with ISPs that give access to the Internet at local call charges no matter where you are in the world.

I'm aware of net2roam and Earthlink, but have no experience of them. Other suggestions also welcome, if you have personal experience and can recommend or would not use.

I'm not interested in hotmail and the like.

Where does your client go?
All over the place or just a few places? Any idea what the Internet access setup is like in those places?

From what I remember, you can't get any form of access in the UK without signing up to something. Here in Poland all you need is a phone socket. Stuff in the Polish Telecom national Internet access number to a new connection with ICW and away you go - local rate intenet cost charged to the hotel or whatever office line you are borrowing (of course, the hotel may have a higher local call rate).

I've never had cause to use roaming and I'm just wondering whether it's actually necessary wherever your client goes.

International roaming
Bob
Sorry that you feel like that, I an understand that you are cynical but I am not in the habit of advertising on accountingweb.

I was simply letting you know that are roaming services available apart from the 2 you mentioned. Having used it myself it does work.

One thing that your client needs to take care about is if he is in the USA to ensure that he uses the correct local number otherwise he may be hit with higher than expected hotel bill - you still have to pay for local access. When faced with a list of several hundred US local access numbers it is fairly dificult to locate the correct one. If not the charge is likely to be equivalent to a National call at standard hotel charges.

MSN - works fine but expects you to sign up and give credit card details. We had problems with them when we wished to cancel our subscription.

And NOT AOL
No useful comments yet: do accountants not go abroad?

Thanks to j h: I'll look at MSN, who hadn't occurred to me.

But I should have said NOT AOL under any circumstances. I think it is the most evil thing on the face of the planet and I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy!

See https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/cgi-bin/item.cgi?id=98766 for futher calumny of AOL from me and several others, especially the very fine and very well-informed comments of Richard Gardner. If you disagree, post your comments there.

No more reference to AOL on this question, please, I beg you.

Clarification?
Thanks, Sheila. I'm not sure how much clearer I can make it.

I'm looking for something that does exactly what net2roam does, but before I recommend net2roam to my client I'd like to hear from anyone who has personal experience of net2roam, or similar services. Are they good, bad or indifferent?

It's people's experience I want to know about, I don't need a long list of alternatives. In fact I'd prefer not to hear from people who actually provide such a service. Call me a cynic, but I have a suspicion that such people will say "X is really good", whether it is or not.

International ISP
AOL gives you access at local rates any where in the world. They also provide a premium service such that you can access (for no dial up charges) again anywhere in the world. MSN used to do the same thing but you would need to check as they appear to provide access in the UK via BT Openworld. Demon provide International call access.

A large number of my clients use AOL and MSN for the purpose of gaining access to the Internet when abroad and have always been happy with the service.

ISP
Can you clarify what you are looking for. Are you looking for dial in access when abroad to pick up email etc?

If so, check out

www.thehostingplace.org.

The service is not advertised heavily but if you buy a dial up service it can be activated for international roaming. This allows local dial up connections in most countries with a small additional charge of between 5 and 10p per minute from the UK ISP.

The company sells a package that will include x minutes per month.

FYI - I have an interest in the company
