Internet Marketing

Didn't find your answer?

As a small/medium sized company, business from our website is becoming increasingly important to us. We are in the process of developing a new website that we will launch in the next few days. Currently approx 10% of our business comes from the internet via links to our partners' websites but we want to increase this percentage and reduce our dependancy on our partners. Can anyone recommend a company or individual who provides advice on marketing websites at a cost that is reasonable to a smaller growing company.

Look for Contacts at Free Pint
If you go to http://www.freepint.co.uk/and search for tips on marketing your website you'll get a lot of free advice and a few contacts.

Useful contacts also seem to pop up regularly in the Free Pint Bar - a discussion forum.

Hope this helps!

Knowledge is power on Internet marketing
Jane,

Internet differs from other media and thus, traditional marketing and advertising do not work. That's why 96 percent of online businesses aren't making a profit.

What you need is INFORMATION on how to market online -- and once you have that, you will KNOW what to do.

Jane, contact me for more information -- I can help you but I cannot advertise it here!

Best wishes

Internet marketing differs from conventional marketing
In starting your marketing -- and even before you actually build your web site -- you should first get correct information about the laws of marketing on the Net.

About 96% of online businesses lose money. I recommend you get information from those who dont. You can find links to one of those successful on the Net from:

Marketing Basics apply
You would get a different response from almost everyone. Remember, the basics of marketing can be applied to almost any area of business/type of product etc. If you see your site as a 'location' you need to promote, then consider the things you would have done to promote a brick and mortar equivalent.
Another option is to mimic similar companies who have a net head start on yours, what works/does not work for them will probably apply to you too, depending on industry and other factors. Check out the best websites too in all industries. Management Today 10/11 or 11/99 cover story is about the 25 best net companies.
Also you can shortlist your marketing strategies by deciding what you WILL NOT pursue, based on cost etc., sort of like multiple choice question where you eliminate the wrong ones.
These can all be done before approaching an internet marketing firm, this way you have a much better idea of what you want, don't want, what will work, not work etc. and these would even help you in choosing the right firm.

Need to know more
This sounds interesting. The fact that you are even seeking advice puts you ahead of the game. Many businesses don't even realise how much they don't know.
I'd agree with Dennis Howlett that this could be a complex issue, but I think he is rather over stating it to define it as a 'horribly difficult problem'. From your outline of the issues, it isn't possible to know just how much business process redefinition is necessary, if any. In fact it sounds more as if 'business' as you describe it means site traffic - in which case the solutions are more likely to lie in the area of customer recruitment, relationship marketing, buying process etc..
It would be good to understand more of the background. If you're interested, have a look at www.webweb.co.uk and pop me a mail.

Good luck.

Internet marketing workshop
Have a look at the workshop transcipt from 4th August, with Margaret Manning, which discussed marketing on the Internet - if I recall correctly, there should be some useful information on there.

To find the transcript, go to the Workshop section (using the menu on the left) and click on the [More] button at the bottom of the page to find earlier transcripts of workshop sessions.

Hope this helps.

[Alternatively - just click here - Ed.]
