Mac Accounting Software

Mac Accounting Software

Didn't find your answer?

I have a new client that uses Macs rather than PC's, and need to source them a good accounting package.

I am aware that Myob and Do$h produce such systems, but can anyone recommend any others? The business is a SME (limited company) and charity. They need stock control and will have a large volume of cash based transactions.

Any thoughts gratefully received because this is an entirely new area for me..

Many thanks in advance,

Sally

Macintosh Accounting Software
Sally

Could you provide more details ?

Nature of business:
Number of users:
Job functions of the users:
eg how many need access to ledgers - accounting department, sales people - access to invoices etc
Project budget:

Operating system:
If not OSX now they will want to migrate in the future, so software needs to be native.

I would not recommend MYOB as it is slow when used over a network in multi user mode.

HansaWorld Enterprise is the best modular solution on the Mac and as Lawrence said it is cross platform, so some staff can use Windows or Linux if they prefer. See http://www.hansaworld.com for more details.

The key to selecting the right tool is the needs analysis. This is best done face to face to allow a consultant to discover the nuances of the business and to offer an appropriate solution. We would be happy to help with this or put you in touch with someone local who can.

Mac Software
Access also works on Macs alebit not quite as well as on Windows some of the modules are PC only.

Would certainly suit a larger number of transactions

Access
Many thanks for everyone's comments - really useful.

I checked with Access regarding what operating system is required and the reply was 'Classic 9 or OSX10.2 and above run in Classic mode'. They said that there are no plans to update the system for use on newer Mac op systems because the problem lies within the database that is maintained by a third party. Annoying...

I also recommend MYOB
As a user, not a consultant or MYOB reseller, I can say I have used MYOB for years including at Charities who handle cash and stock.

Its very good value for money and excellent for non-accounting users, although they WILL need training to get up to speed without tears - despite what the developers say.

Mac accounting software
We are Chartered Certified Accountants and recommend MYOB. We are certified as MYOB consultants and use it for most of our internal work and have over 30 clients using MYOB on Mac & PC.

It is very adaptable and far easier to configure and train than Access. The payroll module is definately the best on Mac. We process 140 payrolls as a bureau so can speak with a lot of experience.

If you need any MYOB expertise we are happy to assist.

Go with MYOB
For the scenario you describe, I would suggest MYOB - either Accounting or AccountingPlus, depending on the exact needs of your client. There are other Mac products around (QuickBooks, shareware etc) but they are generally aimed either at the US market or at very small businesses. Cashbook, the DO$H product for the Mac, is also aimed at very small businesses, and doesn't feature stock control etc.

For the record: this is a personal recommendation only, as a Mac user; I use MYOB Accounting, but I'm not getting anything for recommending it!

Stick to Mac OS X
Dear Sally,

Lucky client having reliable Macs! Make sure they're running OS X and go for something that runs native (avoid the complexities and reliabiliy issues of packages running in Classic mode). MYOB is good and a more sophisticated alternative is Hansa Office/2. See:

for details.

Access Accounts
Hi Sally

I also recommend Access Accounts. Both Access Foundations and Access Horizons are supported on MACS, so your client will have a solution that will allow for growth, and if they ultimately make it to Access Dimensions level they can run it through Terminal Server.

Access run a professional partner program which you can join or you can work directly with a certified partner.

Either way, give me a call as we can help.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Check client operating system
Access Accounts is fine, but check with your client which Apple operating system they would prefer to use (or, indeed, have available) - Access Accounts, as far as I am aware, runs on the old Apple operating system only. Newer Macs can run this, but it's not always a smooth process, and Apple no longer support that operating system.
