Mamut Software

Didn't find your answer?

Last week I wrote wondering if anyone had actually any experience of Mamut Business software the recently accredited application and winner of the Small Business software of the Year at the Accountancy Age awards.

I phoned them up and asked for a demo version which I received on friday. I played around with it over the weekend using their test database. This software is unbelievable. It took less than 5 mins to install and is so full of functionality it is amazing. I had one question for them yesterday so I called their support desk: they answered the phone in about 5 seconds (surely a record for the IT industry) and gave me my answer there and then.

I have tried to find a fault in their system, but can't. All I can say is that I am a convert and recommend to anyone to take a look - they won that award for a very good reason!

Mamut
I had a play around with it an it did look very impressive, with a lot of functionality particularly with regard to CRM. However, I found that for my business, which is a simple manufacturing company, I could not get my head around how to get it to work for us, i.e. from a BOM scenario - how to create a finished product in stock from a raw materials + labour & overheads. I could not see how it could do this.

I was called by Mamut as a follow up and I explained my problem and they admitted the logistics area of the software needed improving, however I recently got an email from them to say they had done this and invited me to give it another go. I downloaded it but it was exactly the same, version number was also the same, so perhaps they had not updated their website. Anyway, I might give it another go when the updated version is available to see what improvements there are.

Mamut vs Quickbooks
I also downloaded the Mamut evaluation software. Whilst I haven't yet given it a fair chance, that is mainly because I fell at the first hurdle.

For example I tried putting on a Sales Invoice for a stock item I had not yet set up in the stock module. It merely warned me that there was no such stock item.

I use QuickBooks currently and find it so useful to be able to add new records 'on the fly'. For example entering an unrecognised stock item in a sales order/invoice enables you to add it there and then without having to go separately into the stock module. In Quickbooks everything can be added on the fly. Also the flexible reporting directly into Excel (no need to export) is powerful.

I wonder if any of the accolades for Mamut are from QuickBooks users? I suspect they are mainly from Sage and other users. Quickbooks has limitations (5 user limit is the main one I struggle with) however it never fails to impress me how sophisticated and flexible it is.

Mamut
First of all, it is great to see so much attention for our product range after just such a short period of time in the UK market.

To Richard Wall, I hope the conversation you have had with my colleagues today following your postings have helped answer your queries. It was pleasing to hear that you are both so positive towards our products. The constructive comments you made are taken very seriously by both myself and the rest of Mamut and are part of the valuable input we receive for improving our product range. Although we won the Small Business Software of the Year Award, we realise that there are continual improvements that can be made and we continually strive to make them.

For Phil Harvey, we certainly are working very hard on developing a POS solution. The functionality we offer is identical in every country of operation so POS is not available in our home country (Norway). Our intention is to offer the same functionality irrespective of where you are using our products. Of course, I hope we can deliver something in time for yourself.

sincerely

What about POS?
I similarly have looked at Mamut as a replacement for our current 25 user system and liked the look and feel of it. One problem though, like a lot of businesses we have a considerable number of small sales which do not justify raising an invoice and are nearly always paid cash. In short, it does not handle any form of Point of Sale efficiently. I have raised this with Mamut and despite having this module in their native Denmark (or is it Norway?) they have not introduced it here. If and when they do, it will be one hell of a programme for the money - but maybe too late for my company
