Microsoft support
If you are a member of the Microsoft Professional Accountants Network you can get free support from Microsoft on 0870 6010100. I used this recently regarding a problem backing up to a pen drive and they were pretty helpful. They didn't solve the problem but they confirmed that I wouldn't be able to restore a backup from a pen drive which saved a lot of time trying.
have you tried this
have you tried exporting into sage changing the date and then you can import the revised file back into MS accounts, after changing the start date in MS accounts.
Not sure if it will work but maybe worth a try if you have not already done so.

You said
there is a specific reason for using microsoft office accounting
I think you just found a specific reason for not using it!
SAAS 'great expectations' under-fulfilled
Nicholas
Since MS Office Accounts is based on a MS SQL database is it not possible to look at the database via ODBC and find the transactions?

Accuse me of hubris if you like, but you obviously haven't tried Liberty Accounts yet ;-)

Online Accounting Software - Liberty Accounts
First releases!
Having worked with more accounting programs than E Taylor has husbands, I would emphasize that all software has quirks (spelt b-u-g-s) in the first ( and second, and third..) releases, and requires exposure to use by many customers before it settles down.
Just because it's MS-ware, with their massive market potential, doesn't mean they can magically overcome this inherent software trait.
People must exercise their critical faculties before adopting new programs; SAAS provides another example of 'great expectations' under-fulfilled - after taking a look at a recent product, I'll be back in (say) 2-3 years, when they have a competitive fully-functional offerring.

Preferences might help
If you cannot find any postings try going to the company tab at the top of the screen, on the drop down menu and open preferences, there is a box headed "prevent postings before" check that date.
Hope this helps
