Mileage claim

Mileage claim

Didn't find your answer?

Dear All,

I am going to a course tomorrow using my own car.

For the purposes of my mileage claim does my journey begin from the office or from home?

Is this always the case? Or are there some conditions? i.e. a journey begins from the office unless ...

Sorry for the simple question but it is the first time I have used my private car for a business trip!

Well there's a long and a short answer

(as so often in tax)

The short answer is that as you are travelling direct to the course which is held other than at your permanent workplace your journey starts at home and is fully allowable.

The long answer involves considering whether the course is "near" (not going there!) your normal workplace and thus the journey is substantially "ordinary communting" and not allowed.

I guess you can probably distinguish without the finer detail, but if you're worried, look up "ordinary commuting" on the HMRC website search.
