More NI arrears madness

More NI arrears madness

Didn't find your answer?

I usually err on the side of sympathy for the Longbenton NI office, they just down the road from me after all. However I received an arrears letter for my 04-05 NI contributions which made me see red!

Why? Well I'm a full time employee for a very large employer that files its PAYE records electronically. All contribution years prior to this have nbeen fine, so what happened with 04-05? I'm not alone, other employees have had these letters, too.

Efficiency? Pah!

NIC arrears
A close family member left the UK in 1987 and returned last year, and since then was paid through PAYE. He has just received a letter asking for arrears for "self-employement since 1987"!

Thanks, Paula
I have responded to Longbenton on my own situation.

There are approximately 12-15,000 on our payroll, so it's a little difficult to see why just a handful have not been correctly processed by HMRC. If I had been a starter or a leaver I could have found it easier to understand.

Sounds like a processing error
It's worth notifying your employer's payroll department and get them to check with NICO that the end of year return has been processed properly.

If you supply a copy of your P60 to Longbenton they should update your records for you.

It's advisable to deal with it now, rather than waiting until you need to claim benefits or pension.
