Just received an updated 2007/08 PAYE tax code for a client. An allowance has been included for "earlier years adjustment" with a refernce to the note on the reverse. The client made a claim for flat rate expenses for all in date years and rather than sending out a cheque for the overpayment, and adjustment has been included in the current code. I 've never seen this before and was not aware of such a policy. Has anybody else come across this? Does anyone know if this will be the norm so that all repayments will be made piecemeal via codings? I can't see that this benefits taxpayers in any way.

Did you request a repayment?
If you didn't tick the box on the tax return to receive a repayment of tax owed then the tax code automatically gets adjusted.
You should be able to ask for a cheque now
