No Self Assessment return required

No Self Assessment return required

Didn't find your answer?

I have just received another notice from Inland Revenue that a client does not need to file a SA return in future. In many cases this is incorrect. These notices are being generated automatically and are causing confusion for my clients. I feel that in an attempt to save money the Inland Revenue is creating problems for agents because they haven't thought the matter through throughly.

Common practice
Yes I keep coming accross this. I think at the end of the letter it does say that if the clients situation changes they should complete a SA! But its written in such a way, its difficult to notice!

I had a client cease trading to become a Company Director, and they sent him the letter!

Its now nearly halfway through May, and I'm still waiting for notification to file a return for myself! I wonder how many others they have not yet notified yet? Or perhaps they don't anymore!

No return confusion
The thing is that the clients only see the words " ... and do not propose to send you returns in the future." and read no further. You then have to persuade them that HMRC is wrong and that they will in fact be charged a fee for the proper completion and submission of their self-assessment tax return.

And on the subject of vanishing 64-8's [and therein lies a whole cart load of comments]. No UTR .. No electronic lodgement.. panic on 31 January !!
