"Notices of coding" problems
Quick warning that some are getting duplicate notices and all sorts of issues. HMRC know this will be an issue this year and have already provided some info, but the best advice for the present is to wait a bit longer before trying to resolve as they may sort some of it internally.
In February we'll do a full write up of where we are up to and what to do. See this question for a slightly fuller story.
But these are not the same errors
this is a completely new system designed to eliminate the problems that have arisen in the past. It just needs to get over the first year when the rubbish is weeded out.
HMRC have also agreed to send copies of all notices to all agents so that agents don't get caught blindside by this - at the request of the agent rep bodies. I know that work is under way to allow more efficient access to agents but the first year issues need to be ironed out first so that the system is working as intended.
I know that HMRCis not always perfect, but I think you have to be fair - these are not errors with HMRC they are the result of capturing quite a bit of duff information provided by employers, and this was part of the reason for introducing the new system - to flush this stuff out and sort it once and for all.
The funniest thing I've read in ages -

"Not always"?
Come on - they are NEVER perfect, and usually not even adequate.
incompetence!!
I also get frustrated with HMRC and other government agencies. if they were run as a private company is, these errors would not be accepted. why should they be part of the norm for HMRC to keep making errors.
i would split the 10% with you and still make a fantastic living.

Usual HMRC chaos
HMRC send me emails of notices of coding for me to logon to their website and obtain as an employer agent but not as a taxpayer agent. I notice employers don't seem to be getting informed of these silly Notices!

No Personal Alowance!
I got two Notices of Coding for a client- both BR.
I rang the Revenue to question where the client was getting his Personal Allowance.
'Looks like he's not entitled to any Personal Allowance' was the bizarre reply! I did manage to talk some sense into her but it does make you wonder who they are employing.
Reminds me of the TV prog 'computers says....' lol.

HMRC Incompetence
We are receiving numerous stupid coding notices dated 4 January 2010.
It is absolutely ridiculous that these errors occur time and again. The wast of money on time and postage is a disgrace and HMRc should be held to account.
Why do HMRC still post out correspondence to agents. Why do they just notupload the post on their webiste and we access it via our agent login.
I wish I could agree to get 10% of the money I could save them!!!
