Online 64-8 versus paper 64-8

Increasingly we've been using online 64-8s for authorisation purposes. We only use the paper form when the online form fails to be accepted for some reason.

Rarely do we spend time attempting to speak to anyone at HM Revenue and Customs these days, but today we did try to resolve a client PAYE matter by phone.

We were rather surprised to be were told that an online 64-8 authorisation (which we have for PAYE) does not authorise HMRC to speak to an agent. For this there must be a paper 64-8. End of conversation.

Is this really the case? We were told this by two different people.

Sounds like you got one of WD's mates! Always ring the agent help line, they are usually manned by HMRC staff who know what they are doing. An online authorisation is the same as a paper 64-8, once its been processed.

There's a lot of idiots in HMRC who don't know what they are talking about. Don't worry, if you make a complaint you'll get an apology - so that's alright then.
