Outlook - backup

Outlook - backup

Didn't find your answer?

I am using Outlook -tasks, calendar, email etc more and more.
However I am concerned about loss of eg future reminders etc if my computers fail.
I have a tape backup of the server but I also like to burn critical data to CD on a regular basis. eg Digita accounts and Tax databases, My documents etc, payroll etc - just belt and braces.
But where is the Outlook data stored?
Is there a "normal" location or will it be wherever the network providers put it?

Thanks
knuckles

I agree - export it
Having changed servers over the weekend I can endorse the "Export it" option already suggested. As we haven't that many users, we exported every users data (File - Import and Export) to a new folder on the individual C:drive (e.g. " Outlook Folder"). When the new server was up and running we simply imported the data again. Note you'll probably have to do several "exports" - mail/contacts/notes etc but just create a filename that suits your purposes.

And, yes everything went swimmingly!

Good luck

Outlook back up - Support from Microsoft
Look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;181014 for Outlook 98, and

+ at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290827 for Outlook 2002 (and 2000 and 2003).

Stores
It depends whether you are using Outlook with Exchange or not. (If you are using Outlook with Microsoft SBS then you are using Exchange). With Exchange the details are stored in the mailbox within the Exchange database and you will need to back up the database to secure the items.

If you are using Outlook with 'personal stores' (In Internet only mode) then the details are stored in a PST file usually called outlook.pst.

If you search your disk for *.pst you should find it.

outlook express within windows folders?
I think outlook express inbox and other folders you have created are stored within the windows folders somewhere - they have if I recall correctly .dbx entensions.

I back up these folders onto cd at home though I've never actually tried to restore them. I can't recall the root directory but there is a folder called outlook express on my pc (within windows folder) possibly under application data and some where below that. Perhaps you could do a folder search for outlook express to identify the location or inbox.dbx for your inbox.

On-line back-ups is, in my experience, the simplest, most time-efficient (and therefore cost-efficient) solution. I recommend Backup Direct (see link below), as they are very good value and have a very efficient help desk to answer any queries.

What about Outlook Express
Knuckles has brought up a good point. What about Outlook Express - where are these files stored?

Also, what about Office? I wouldn't need to back up the entire Office suite as I have the original CDs - but can I back up areas that I change such as settings?

export it!
you can export information held in outlook - and you can select the areas to export from, and if you select the appropriate export to type then you can import it back. In Outlook 2000 that is the "Microsoft Personal Folder File" type.

For more info type in import into the help, and follow your nose.
