I have been trying to help out a client with their email settings. They have a domain manager who is only going to provide them with mail pop 3 services. They therefore are having to use another ISP for their smtp protocol outgoing emails. This means we had to setup two seperate accounts, one for incoming and one for outgoing. This is working fine until they receieve a mail incoming and hit the reply button or forward button, what happens then is that outlook express attempts to send the mail out with the account used to receive the incoming mail - which has no valid smtp server available. Does anyone have an idea how this can be resolved? I am also suggesting they move to full Outlook 2000 so if any solutions are known for that software it would be appreciate greatly too.
If this is unclear please let me know, but if anyone could help I would be eternally grateful.

This still happens, though ...
This is interesting for me and I thought I'd throw this into the ring:
I have had the same problem with Outlook but have been unable to resolve it and have been left believing that there are some ISP's whose IP addresses are in a batch that have been blacklisted by the likes of tesco.net which hosts two of my family's email addresses.
The upshot is that whilst we can receive messages using POP3 accounts with Outlook, there is absolutely no way that we can send them or reply to them.
We are running BT Broadband and I have spoken both to Tesco and BT about this issue.

Sorry Ian but because of the way BTBroadband works, you suggestion won't work. They tell me that I should have mail.tesco.net as my outgoing SMTP and tesco tell me that it should be mail.btbroadband.com ... then I got the blackballing news and I'm stuck.
I can go onto the tesco site and send my messages from there if necessary. Fortunately, my tesco account is only a backup account that I don't use much.

I might be wrong but
why not use one account for the pop domain account, but simply use the outgoing smtp mail server of the ISP your client uses. I have 2 pop accounts in addition to my ISP's and it works fine for me. I don't see the necessity to have two accounts for this task, and anyway as you describe, it doesn't work.
Try these settings

In the Accounts window under the Tools section of the menu bar, try setting them up as follows -
A) Account for the incoming mail ~
a1) On the General tab, load your preferred own email address.
a2) On the servers tab, load the pop3 adress in the incoming window and the outgoing smtp address in the outgoing window. Also load the account name and password for your incoming mail server.
B) Account for the outgoing mail ~
b1) On the general tab, load the same email address as in (a1).
b2) On the servers tab, load the incoming mail and outgoing mail server addresses in the POP3 and SMTP address boxes for your outgoing mail service provider together with the account name and password for your outgoing mail service provider.
In this way, incoming email will be collected from both and outgoing mail will be sent from the latter with the incoming mail address shown as the reply to address on the message.

I have exactly the same set up as you describe, and my solution is set up the way Chris describes.
