PAYE course?

PAYE course?

Didn't find your answer?

I have a member of staff who I want to train up to carry out the payroll for my clients. She has no experience of PAYE at all.

Can anyone recomend the best course to go on in and around the Saffron Walden/Cambridge area?
Si

This might sound a bit strange,
but have you thought about...HMRC! The business support section provide free seminars covering, amongst other things, PAYE.

After all, they have a vested interest in taxpayers paying the right amount of tax!

Suggestion
The IPPM (Institute of Payroll and Pensions Management) run a range of courses including many suitable for beginners.

Visit http://www.ippm.org for more details.

Use the HMRC's publications
I agree that a course would be a waste of money. Show her how to use the payroll program (I assume that you are not expecting her to do it the old-fashioned way with endlessly unfolding P11s and manual tables), but save the time and cost of making telephone calls to the helpline by giving her the HMRC's CD-ROM and their E13 helpbook, "Day-to-day payroll", for reference.

I agree with Richard
Payroll software is a dead cinch to use. The problems for a newcomer arise on the technical issues of operating paye - starters, leavers, P45's, P46's etc etc. I have always found HMRC to be extremely helpful in giving help over the phone regarding paye matters (unlike their SA colleagues). You could give your new member of staff a basic grounding and she would very quickly learn the ropes giving that she would be operating the payroll on a daily basis.

I think a course would be a waste of money as she would probably forget most of what she had been taught once out of the "classroom". The best way to learn is to get stuck in and keep phoning the HMRC paye helplines.

Being organised is key. Complete and submit the correct forms, keep copies on file, send out everything on time etc etc.

Another tip is to keep a few A4 sheets of "tips". "What to do if a starter has/doesn't have a P45 - is above or below the paye threshold". "What to do with the different parts of the P45 for starters/leavers". "SSP/SMP". etc
