Payroll software

Payroll software

Didn't find your answer?

I changed my payroll software from Sage earlier this year and after recommendations bought the Moneysoft payroll. This was an excellent buy but very disappointingly I have been unable to get proper support with FBI problems (about 3 months so far and still not working) and recent emails don't get replies. This obviously does not bode well for end of year.

I am now looking for another package which will last me. I need multi company with up to 100 employees and full internet filing.

Moneysoft support inadequate
I have had a similar problem to Peter Watkins. The software seems very good (much better than IRIS PAYE Master) but not worth buying if you cannot get support.

MONEYSOFT PAYROLL & FBI
We tried last year to file electronically our multi-company payrolls. I found that telephone calls to Moneysoft were handled very well.

However, we were not able to file. Having had a few days rest from SATR's I re-visited the Agent details section in the Employers Data. We had keyed in the password that the Gateway supplied us for PAYE.

I then changed it to our SA password and everything filed Ok... might be worth re-evaluating.

Moneysoft FBI
I too had a number of problems with getting the FBI for PAYE to work on Moneysoft payroll.

I found that telephoning them was by far the fastest and esiest way to resolve matters which they did swiftly and efficiently.(They prefer to resolve problems by telephone).

The problems lay with the inadequacies of the Inland Revenue software at their gateway end, not with Moneysoft.

FBI works extrtemely well and the Moneysoft Payroll software seems to be very well written.

Perhaps worth persevering with.

Nigel.

What's wrong with Sage?

The problem with Sage is that it is now pricing itself out of the market for small business. I used to recommend it to all my clients but since they started putting their prices up (for both support and product) by extortionate amounts most of my clients refused to buy. All said the same thing - too expensive.

There are other cheaper products that do as much as or even better than Sage. Most also have transfer routines to move data from Sage.

New Payroll
I've used Earnie from Intex Software, and previously Classic from the same supplier, for 10 years now. It is multi-company, easy to learn and I have had great support when needed (seldom) from the hotline. It is on the IR list.

Payroll Professional
If you need multi company and FBI, then you should look at Payroll Professional from Star

http://www.starplc.com

The software was designed as Bureau solution for Accountants, so no problem with multi company and FBI has been there since 2002.

Full data Imports available from all major products, so should be able to move you before the new tax year.

If you're running a bureau be careful...
Lots of good payroll products have already been mentioned.

If you're running a bureau, make sure the software can cope.

By this, I mean bureau operators will need to run year-end procedures and prints at different times for different clients.

Consider those weekly payrolls which need to be calculated according to the new tables at the same time as monthly payrolls which will still need to be run under the old tables.

Star Payroll and Access Payroll are brilliant

(I'm independent, with no link to either)

Full functionality
I recommend IRIS PAYE Master. We've run it for a long time and it is robust, simple and highly effective. FBI has been no problem for us in either of the past two years.

Nigel, Stephen
I don't particularly want to move from Moneysoft because like you I find the software very easy to use and would have no hesitation recommending it if I had the right support.

I have telephoned the company 4 times with the same problem - 1st time I was told there was no one there who could help me. Next time same thing and they will call me back. They did'nt. Next call I was told to email files to them so they could try and find the problem.

Since then total silence and no replies to my emails.

Beware Iris
IRIS bought Freeway software a while ago, each year they have been jacking up the price with absolutely no improvement to the product despite several recommendations. It has a printer problem so be careful to test it out with your printers first, particulary if you use lazer and inkjet on a network or on a simple printer switch. It also has a problem dealing with 4 weekly pay that they still haven't resolved.

Qtac Solutions
Peter

I have been using Qtac for about 4 years now with virtually no problems. The licence is flexible and can be upgraded very easily as your requirements change.

I have always found a quick telephone call is all that is needed if I ever run into difficulty (about 3 calls in the last 4 years).

You can call them on 0117 935 3500 or email [email protected].

What's wrong with Sage?
I say that as someone who has never used Sage Payroll, and I'm not a big fan of Sage, but guessing you're using their accounting software why abandon the integration? Doesn't Sage handle FBI?

In my current job I inherited Iris PAYE-Master, which is decent enough. I'm fairly sure it has multi-company availability. There's an internet filing option but I've not investigated this. Their number is 0870 243 1952. Make sure your license starts after 6/4, as my current license runs out in a couple of days!

Previously I used software from QTAC solutions. The software started very small but has grown, and handles multi-company. Not sure about FBI, but I'll bet they do now.

My main criteria for replacing payroll software is integration with the accounts package, as it's a real pain keying everything in.
