Pdf to word

Pdf to word

Didn't find your answer?

I need to edit a pdf file. Is it possible to transfer it to word and edit it in word without losing the format in pdf?

Convert .pdf to .doc
I assume that the desire to convert .pdf files to .doc format relates to incoming files. Therefore, why not email the sender asking for the file in .doc format.

Is there not a question of the ownership of the file and would tampering with the file infringe the rights of the owner. I export all my .doc files as .pdf and woe betide anyone tampering with them. The conversion to .pdf is to protect the content of file which may/may not contain my signature.

Lastly, .doc files can contain viruses but I have yet to hear of .pdf files bearing the creations of idiots.

Save the money, email the owner and get the permission in the form of a .doc version. Does ANYONE out there NOT have MS Word or .doc generating software?

Depends on the layout of your pdf file
At home (so I cannot give you the names right now) I have 2 small apps that came free on a PC Plus magazine covermount.

One will read a pdf file and convert it to a Word rtf file that you can edit. It will also keep hold of page/table layout to an extent.

The other is a printer driver that creates a pdf file.

If all you have is text and no embedded graphics for things like logos and backgrounds then those two should do it.

I shall try to remember to post the program names later today

edit a pdf
The simple (but expensive) answer is to buy acrobat writer, you can make limited changes in pdf documents with it easily (unless it is protected)

I dont think you can CHANGE a pdf otherwise without recompiling it, (probably by extracting it to another format then resaving it)

The problem with doing this is that you will NEVER get the formatting correct, I dont know of a tool that can do it reliably.

Dont forget one of the reasons for pdf usage is that the formatting won't change between viewers, so a lot of docs that rely on layout use pdf. If you edit it, you mess with the layout.

The best thing to do is resave the doc from scratch if you can (if you created the pdf yourself).

Try download.com
There are at least a couple of downloads that claim to be able to convert PDF files to MS Word. Neither of these are free beyond the trial period though.

You'd then have to convert back to PDF. I use Primo (found on download.com) which is free and seems to work ok.

Note though that it will be apparent to anyone who had the original PDF that you have reconverted the file. There are a number of indicators, but the most obvious giveaway will be that any bookmarking in the original PDF will be lost, as most free PDF creators don't included such advanced functions.

A slightly more radical, but free, approach would be to download EasyOffice. This claims to be able to create and edit PDF files, although I wouldn't be surprised if there is a catch.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on...

Save acrobat documents as rtf
Acrobat 5 and 6 both come with a save to rtf format facility, but you will lose formatting
