Pop-ups - dontcha just love them - not?

Pop-ups - dontcha just love them - not?

Didn't find your answer?

I appreciate that the site has to generate funds in order to exist as a nice user friendly community - hence corporate partners, ads etc. But do we have to endure the pop up [currently Investors in People] that won't let us do anything on-site whilst it is unfurling itself? Sorry, but that is going to alienate your valued contributors/readers.

You can turn off the error messages
Well at least there's a solution for 'runtime errors' - its usually caused by insufficient error checking of javascript used in the browser.

To turn off the error message reporting, go to IE's Tools menu.

Then pick 'Advanced' and look under the 'Browsing' heading. Tick the box 'Disable script debugging' and untick the box 'Display a notification about every script error'.

Finally, mail accountingweb about the error message, they'll get one of their html builders onto it and get it fixed ;-)

Cheers - Neil.

What's a popup - I've never seen one!
I can't remember the last time I saw a popup or popunder ad on any website. Except for when I turn Norton Internet Security off.

I've been quite chuffed with this software from Norton. I originally bought it for the firewall & antivirus, but it came with a rather good popup blocker. And you can block those horrid animated adverts. And you can block the dreaded flash animations!

Nice and quiet life I like to lead.

BUT - be warned that some sites won't work with NIS on. I don't re-visit these sites as a rule, but sometimes you have to for business reasons (and they have to be damn good ones!). These sites need to be explicitly allowed allow their popups :-(

MSN Bans popups.... why not AWeb ?
Look everybody *knows* how infuriating popups are - there's really no excuse.

Check the report this week on MSN banning popups for very good commerical reasons -

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3487225.stm

Not to mention that the way they are usually implemented means the page *almost* loads then stops for upwards of 30 seconds while the popup loads.

Well implemented popups should have a delay after the page loads before they are called. That way you can read some of the page content and scroll to see if it's what you want before having an ad rammed down your throat.

everybody hates them
the people who send them out should be barred from going anywhere near a computer for the rest of their lives

and they should be reported to NCIS for any reason that anyone can come up with, now theres a good use for the NCIS...

Double Jeopardy At A Cost
Combined with 'mouse overs' pop-ups are an irritant commercial breakdown of all IT operations, depending on memory available and windows opened at the time.

However, it is justified, because these 'capitalist in cyber-space' keep the 'net running by their investment in advertising. However, some have dubious goods and cosmetic services to sell...know wot I mean Squire!

Dodgy geezers
Is it really Investors In People? Our firewall won't let me look at the ad.

Loathe
But at least the ones on here are separate windows. Some sites have one that seem to be part of the graphics on the page. They are seriously intrusive.

Is it really IIP?
I never look at them; just delete asap. I suppose I come in the loathe category but it's more a case of despising them and thus treating them with contempt.

Otherwise this is a damn fine site (lest I give the wrong impression).

Loathe!
But I find that if I just click on the main page the pop up goes behind and I then just close it when I'm done. I used to close the pop up as soon as it appeared but on some sites they just keep coming back unless you let them do what they want in the background.
