I lost a client to another accountant who was charging less than me. I received an information request from the new accountant on is headed paper with the company name which ended in the words Chartered Accountants.
I have checked on all the relevant insitutes' & association's web-site & cannot trace this firm. How can I be sure that this firm is in fact a Chartered Accountant and if he is not what can be done about it?

One Example of many
The sheer volume of of all sorts of accountants means our bodies do not have the resources to trawl websites and check. This means just too many "accountants" take the advantage. This may be just one example of many.
I think you can call the relevant professional body and outline your concerns. If you find out they are not CA, you can also inform Trading Standards.
I think a better for you is to educate your clients and potentail clients a CA means how they can check you are registered CA.
Be sure
Make very sure of your facts before you say anything that could be contrued as libelous if he is in fact chartered. Before jumping to conclusions I would advise that you check not only his name, but those of any partners and make absolutely certain of your facts.

I think
you are entitled to ask your own accounting body to make enquiries. After all, if somebody is holding out that they have a qualification that they do not have, the it is up to the accountancy body to make the complaint.
Be very careful what , if anything, you say or write to the client that has gone.
question him
just ask the new accountant for details of his credentials or get a friend to saying he/she is looking for an accountant, etc.
!! there you are - another problem solved !!

The OP says his letter heading stated "Chartered Acountant" so what do you expect a phone call to discover ?
The ONLY course of action is to report your doubts to the Institute - and forget it. If you repeat your doubts to anyone else, and you're wrong, then you could find yourself on the end of an expensive legal action. I would not even state to the Institute that you do not believe him to be qualified, merely that you are concerned as you cannot locate him on their register of members.
As you have lost the client, doesnt this all sound a bit like sour grapes ? Personally in such a situation I couldnt care less if the other guy claims to be the King of Siam - that's your ex clients problem, not your.

Calling yourself a Chartered Accountant, when you are not is fraud.

That's the whole point - no one knows whether this person is in fact qualified or not.
Sorry CD but
'That's the whole point - no one knows whether this person is in fact qualified or not.'

The OP stated - "How can I be sure that this firm is in fact a Chartered Accountant and if he is not what can be done about it?" which implied the facts were in doubt.
