2014/15 Tax calculation spread sheet

2014/15 Tax calculation spread sheet

Didn't find your answer?

I am looking for a simple spread sheet for tax.   For many years I used one from willis publications and witch both of whom have stopped publication. They were most helpful in a draft tax liability without having to complete a full return.

I'm sure your accountant will have one

I believe the OP is an accountant.

What he wants is a spreadsheet that someone else has taken time to model so that he doesn't have to.

Ah, of course.

How silly of me to assume that an accountant would be able to create his/her own spreadsheet to draft clients tax liabilities :)

We did our own

Should I offer to sell it for £98? No, because we'd get stuck with supporting it if it didn't work properly in all cases. We only did it because it suits us to use the HMRC site to file the returns rather than commercial software. So we use it more as a presentation tool and always check the comp against HMRC though because its fiddly to cater for cases like dividend earners with low other income, starter savings rate and higher earners. It does deal with most forms of income though.

Fiddly, but doable all the same

Something like VT Accounts for Tax?

Absolutely, but would you include all the permutations, plus capital gains and all the other sections for £99? Actually if someone did an Excel based program for Tax that printed client schedules and HMRC filings that would be useful. Like a VT Accounts for tax. Does such a thing exist?

Excel-based tax program

Rebecca Benneyworth's QMS software does online filing and runs in Excel. Not sure if it does client schedules though.

Quite unbelievable

Just ask for a sheet rather than prepare one yourself.

I am actually getting rather annoyed now thinking of it, so I am away...

Annoyed - why?

I have numerous tax packages at my disposal, so a spreadsheet like this would be of no use to me, but the OP may not be so fortunate.

OK, the sheet may be a trivial ‘= income after personal allowances x tax rate’ or, more likely, quite complex. If the OP is lucky and finds a kindly sole who enjoys programming and helping others, then I wish them both good luck. There is no harm in asking. IMO the question was worth it just for Pauls reply above.

Issues

To be fair I already have one in use for my clients - so it isn't any work to build

The issue, like you rightly put, is the ongoing tweaks and complaints from people that don't understand a formula.

I once got told, by the audit partner, that she couldn't rely on my audit evidence because she didn't understand the formulae in the schedule - I told her "you don't have to understand or rely on it, you're relying on me" Believe it or not she was happy with that and we moved on.

Third parties - not worth it though

If you follow

this link - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/self-assessment-technical-spe... - you will get to the HMRC developers page. That has a Word doc version of the full tax computation and a test case generator.

You can copy the Word doc into an Excel sheet and then build your own by following the steps for each stage and getting that to feed into the SA302 comp that is included as part of it.

Takes a while but you can DIY that way

...and of course as an additional 'helpful hint'

as it stands:

once you have set up the first year, andso long as they continue to release the comp this way to developers, andso long as you can find the Word doc,

then by following the change log at the start of the Word document it is relatively easy to create the next years version, or update the current year for changes as they are released, by copying to a new file and making the changes.

I did that for a few years to drive the tax reserve calculations for large partnerships. Not had to bother with that recently.
