64-8

64-8

Didn't find your answer?

HI

I have recently sent a 64-8 form to HMRC. I am acting on behalf of a client who is not self emploted and doesnt file a tax return, He just simply want some tax back for uniform.

What happens after sending the 64-8 form?, will i be getting a letter from the HMRC approving my authorisation?. As i dont deal with self assessment, i do not use the online service

Thanks

Nothing from HMRC

HMRC don't send out any acknowledgement. In fact our experience is that a fairly large percentage of 64-8 forms never even get actioned by HMRC - it's obviously not as important as sending out threatening letters.

You just have to assume that the 64-8 has been actioned - until you are told otherwise - and do whatever you intended to do.

My experience is the same as John above.

The biggest headache in my accounting career has been trying to get through to HMRC and then trying to be put through to someone who possesses a clue about anything remotely taxing.

64-8's - some get actioned, some don't and some take months to be processed.

The organisation is something of a joke

Your best bet is to keep a copy of the 64-8 as you will need as posted above a lot of 64-8's never seem to get actioned and any query withHMRC officer you can e mail a copy to him to save time.

64-8

My client posted one first class last Tuesday and when I phoned on Friday it was on the system. Also I have found the agent's helpline answers after 30 seconds and they have been very helpful. I don't know why the rest of you have such bad experiences.

To AliMosawi

I am only guessing but I speculate that a good part of your problem is in reading the exam question properly.  Example

Q: What happens after sending the 64-8 form?

A: I have problems passing CTA exams.

Anyway, to return to the topic, I suggest to the OP that you can probably sort the whole thing out without having to activate an agent authority.  You have a colleague with a single highly specific one-off issue that can almost certainly be resolved completely by the taxpayer submitting a form P87 which can be completed and filed by him under your guidance if required without your having to be formally appointed as an agent.

With kind regards

Don't forget that if you are a member of a professional body (and one hopes that you are) that you have to have mandatory PI insurance even if you only have 1 client.  You may decide this is not worth while with just 1 client, in which case try and refer the business elsewhere.

Pretty much as the last comment.

but HMRC won't want a tax return for that reason a leeter will do. They don't want a tax return unless there is one of the reasons given on their form SA1. Registering for self assessment
