Is accommodation expenses claimable for work away from home?

Is accommodation expenses claimable for work...

Didn't find your answer?

Hi all

Our client is a subcontractor who lives in Peterborough. He has been travelling to London for around 9 months of the tax year and rented a room for £150 per week rather than staying in hotels or other temporary accommodation. He travelled back to Peterborough during the weekends and his postal address is also in Peterborough. His mother looks after all of his paperwork in Peterborough. He is now working in Peterborough carrying out another Contract.

He had to stay in London in order to complete the job he was contracted to do. Can we claim the London accommodation as an expense? The issue we have is that the level of accommodation is quite high in relation to our client's turnover but the client has advised us that we had to work in London at the time since there wasn't much work at that time in Peterborough. Would this be an allowable business expense?

I look forward to hearing your views in this matter. Thank you in advance.

Have you followed the Tim Healy case?
