i am in my forties and am looking for a career change. i would like to know if i could become a accounts assistant by studying with the aat doing levels 2 - 4

Hi John,

In theory you could become an accounts assistant with no experience, it all depends what the job requires. I managed to get some part time accounts experience at a factory that i was working at in the warehouse. After a year I managed to get a job full time as an accounts assistant, they then sponsored me to do AAT.

There is no reason why you cant get a job as an accounts assistant but if you no previous experience then be prepared to join at the bottom of the ladder.

It can be done part time/evenings and will guide you as to the basics, you will also be 'ahead of the curve' so to speak in applying for jobs.

The accounts assistant I took on 18 months ago had no experience, but I was impressed with her enthusiasm and she was studying AAT in her own time, so I gave her her "lucky break".

She's now leaving here to a much more responsible role with two direct reports.

So it can be done, just don't expect it to be easy!
