Adjusting prior year tax return

Adjusting prior year tax return

Didn't find your answer?

I've just done a tax return for a client I took on a few months ago and, having reviewed last year's return, have spotted that the previous accountant didn't put through a loss carry back claim.  Situation is that 2011/12 was the frst year as a sole trader after being employed previously.  A reasonable sized loss was made in 11/12 (I didn't prepare the accounts or tax return so will just accept it as correct) and a small one in 2012/13.  Therefore I and the client agree that carrying back the losses is more effective than carrying forward.

The loss in 11/12 was £13.8k and in 12/13 around £4k.  I understand the 11/12 loss must be carried back three years and then work forward from there.  Client's income was £18,825 in 2008/9 so all the loss is utilised there with only £1k of wasted personal allowance.  2012/13 loss will be relieved in full with no loss of PA if carried back to 2009/10.  All well and good and client is very happy with this.

The only question is, I didn't file the 11/12 return and it was done using commercial software so how do I physically amend it to put in the loss carry back claim?  Do I simly re-submit it using the figures used in the original return but with the loss carry back section completed or do I need to write to HMRC to ask them to amend?

I use BTC for self assessments for what it's worth

I just had to amend an 11/12 return in BTC

I have only recently acquired BTC, so wasn't sure how to submit an amended return, but it took care of it for me.

When I tried to submit the return, it was initially rejected as one had been submitted before (not by me), but then it gave me the option to force submission as an amended return, which I did and it was accepted.

If submitting electronically you need to submit the full completed and corrected return. If you want to amend on paper then you inform HMRC which boxes have been amended.
