Amending a Tax Return - how far back can we go?

Amending a Tax Return - how far back can we go?

Didn't find your answer?

It's just become clear that a client has accidentally overstated rental income received for the past five years, so wishes to amend the self-assessment returns. Am I right in thinking that at this stage it's only possible to amend the 2011 SA return, and the deadline for doing this is 31.01.2013 (on basis it was issued 06.04.2011)?

Is there no mechanism for amending the 2010 and prior returns?

Thanks

Write to HMRC telling them which returns are wrong and what the correct figures are.

Different processes

You can amend the 2011 return directly online, by 31 January 2012

You can claim overpayment relief for 2009 and 2010 by writing to HMRC.  The time limit for this claim is four years from the end of the tax year concerned so 2008 is now out of date. Just writing may not be enough as the claim must be "in the correct form"
