I've been looking at client portals and most of the prices seem to be around £1,000 per year but SmartVault seems to do everything I want and is less than £20 per month.

Does look good but the small print says - Requires Minimum of 3 Firm Users so your looking at ~£60 per month.

What about the "basic plan" which is only US$29 per month? That doesn't mention anything about "per user".
Pricing
The pricing is somewhat odd on their website, it mentions the basic package at $29/month but then $35 on the front page (with a minimum of 3 users?
Edit - the one on the front page is actually an offer I think as it mentions Unlimited Everything?
Going to put it on my to do list to have a look at it but let me know how you get on with it Peter.
I can't understand it
I have emailed them asking them to clarify why I should need the Accountants plan if there's only me in the practice.
