Are Property Design Exhibitions Claimable

Didn't find your answer?

Hi All

I have a new client that has a large property portfolio, currently 18 properties.

They are claiming expenses for visiting design shows and exhibitions and art shows.

They are claiming travel to these and accommodation and other expenses.

Are these allowable against a property business?

Thanks for your help in advance.

To what end?

How are they trying to justify these expenses as wholly and exclusively incurred for the business? Sounds unlikely to be allowable.

Yes but for what benefit?

Yes, but for what (whose) benefit/ purpose?

Are we talking about partners in a partnership adding new personal skills by going to these exhibitions, what do the exhibitions purport to add? Can this be CPD ?

If they do add something how is to be applied, are they saying that the inspiration  engendered will be applied to the next property they acquire?

I think there are a number of issues here but the first to address is, in what circumstance would the application of the derived skills (if there are any derived skills) be applicable to revenue ?

There is a line here re what is deductible and what is not and I might have more sympathy is they were a developer rather than an investor.

We certainly purchase books and publications re architrcture/building and construction/ Spons price guides etc, and the odd person does attend the odd specific exhibition (tends to be energy efficiency technology these days) but we are a developer (well were, not sure we still are), we acquired sites, obtained planning, designed the houses, got warrants and sometimes even had built the end units, there is a difference between this and a passive investor who slaps paint round a unit (especially prize plum),.

There is also the issue that design flair tends not to be the order of the day re most rental properties, given tenants may not take care of the units magnolia paint tends to be the design choice. (If they have 18 units they ought to use standard paint colours across the portfolio with the lower price contractor paint )

So, why do they go to the exhibitions?
