Are sex toys tax deductlble

Are sex toys tax deductlble

Didn't find your answer?

I have found myself as an accountant to the stars....porn stars!

The receipts are amusing to say the least but just wondering about sex toys for adult entertainers. Are they tax deductible or not?

Many Thanks

Of course

Why not?

I wasn't aware that morals have ever been part of the UK tax code!

They are just "tools of the trade".

Duality of purpose

Whatever you do, don't get involved in any discussion about private use.  That's all I'm saying, because I'll inevitably make some inadvertent double entendre if I rabbit on.

This had made me giggle (probably not your intention), but well needed half way through a wet, horrible and very busy January :)

A new challenge

With a lot of questions being quite simple, it is good to have one that is both hard and penetrating once in a while. I do hope you have properly familiarised yourself with the clients' work so you can service them properly.

As nigelburge says, the key question is the business use. It doesn't matter what the business is, if the expense is for the purposes of the business, the principle applies in the same way as for any other trade.

Yes...

... I'd agree with the general vibe of the thread; that your clients ought to get relief in these circumstances.

Surely

Loose tools - revenue expense is the relief to seek...

But never mind the tax treatment

Have you considered the double entry aspects?

Oops

I didn't know what a sex toy was so I googled it on my work PC.

My disciplinary hearing is at 10.30 tomorrow morning :(

many many years ago

I had a client who was a glam "model" amongst other things. When she came in for the first (and sadly last) time with her records she insisted on going through all the receipts that made for an interesting albeit slightly uncomfortable half hour. Thats the first and only time I've seen an expense analysis with headings such as "condoms" and "sex aids". If I remember correctly we did not make an adjustment for private use and the Revenue did not challenge it (can't think why) so you should be fine.

A word of caution

When you do the stock take don't leave your phone on vibrate. It'll just confuse things when you want to be in and out as soon as possible..

Indeed, but the competition is stiff.

Apology

Sadly every time a question like this is posted, covering a vocation within the sex industry, it pretty soon descends into petty innuendo, crude comments and childish giggling. I myself have contributed to it on this occasion and regret it as such comments have no place on a professional forum such as this.

I therefore wish to apologise sincerely, deeply, humbly and profusely for being such a [***].

Sex Toys

One presumes that the clinic visits are allowable as is douching of Vinyl Vera. Are the elastoplast allowable for healing Vinyl Vera after the love bites?

Capital Allowances

Shouldn't they be classed as "machinery" if they have a life of more than two years and therefore capital allowances claimed? The batteries could be expensed though.

I agree with the plumster with regard to certian articles but shouldn't other accoutrements be properly described as "plant"?

From the HMRC manuals CA21100:

"In its ordinary sense it (that is, plant) includes whatever apparatus is used by a businessman for carrying on his business - not his stock-in-trade which he buys or makes for sale; but all goods and chattels, fixed or movable, live or dead, which he keeps for permanent employment in the business."

That more accurately describes Vinyl Vera (as referred to by Yoshik above) in my book.

Machinery

I am indebted to "The Triggler" for his support (my old truss was getting worn out)

We do of course have to draw a distinction between "Machinery" as commonly defined in the dictionary as apparatus with moving parts and "Plant" which is as "TheTriggler" describes it. Anything requiring batteries is likely to be "Machinery" in my opinion while Vinyl Vera is as you say likely to be "Plant". Although I have to say I'm not completely aware of the features of that particular model.

NFSW?

National Federation of Sugar Workers?

I've always thought it odd that the acronym Not Safe For Work, also stands for Now Show Friends and Workmates. Bit of a mixed message there.

NFSW
Yes, I wondered the same. I certainly didn't want to google 'male sex toys' for fear of the targeted adverts that I would get in the future!
