My Friday afternoon tip
If you are boiling an egg straight from the fridge put it in a dish of warm water first for a minute or two.
This gentle warming allows air to seep out of the shell without bursting it.
Then boil in a medium saucepan on heat setting 7 (gas - medium) for four minutes.
Open at rounded end.
Eat with toast & a little salt.
Best eaten at breakfast.
David

Can't wait for the Egg-Boiling Excellence Awards.

1. Take care which chickens you use. Remember that some hens don't lay eggs. If your hen isn't laying, check that it isn't a cockerel. Or dead.

2. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

3. Use a spoon. Not a fork, or chopsticks.

4. Choose your salt carefully. Table salt is usually better than gritting salt. If the salt container has more than one hole in the top, it may be pepper. Do be careful.

5. If your egg is crunchy, you have probably forgotten to not eat the shell.

6. Sign up for our Egg Excellence Conference. All aspects of egg-boiling will be covered. Sign-up before breakfast for a 30% discount price of only £299 per delegate.

I wouldn't store my egg in the fridge, they can absorb flavours/smells if you have something particularly pungent stored in there too. It can also save you a minute or too if you just can't wait that long for your boiled egg.

The book man (doesn't every office have one?) left Boily and Wedgey for sale a couple of months ago, comprising a microwave boiling solution and egg slicer. I highly recommend the pan boilers give it a try. No rattling around in a ban of foaming water, and so less chance of breakage, and only a nominal chance of radiation poisoning.

TIP: You still need a bowl of cold water to chuck it in for a couple of minutes when cooked, especially if you are planning on shelling it for a sandwich, because it comes out insanely hot.

I'll cover the mechanics and pitfalls of sandwiches at another date.

I didn't think you were. You're not that sort of person. But xkcd is just too good not to share for those that didn't recognise it.

Surely this one is more appropriate to here though.

Yes, that is really going to win my business!

Fridays

If ever I lose track of the day of the week, a cursory glance at typical Friday afternoon correspondence on AWEB is enough to remind me of the imminence of the weekend. Long may this tradition continue!

are you not leaving yourself vulnerable to the idiot who sees the whilst it "may" be hot there would then be some times when boiling water is not hot and then innocently scald themselves.

Does your PI cover this advice?

There possibly also needs to be further detail given  outlining Charles's Law/Boyle's Law ,as combined ,into;

P1x V1 /T1=P2xV2/T2

The guidance gives no indications of the dangers of pressure within the egg boiling scenario, and does little to dissuade anyone from using a pressure cooker or similar within the process.

EGGS ARE DANGEROUS WITHIN CONFINED SPACES ought to be stamped upon each egg.

Before boiling.

Drop from an upstairs window onto the lawn.
It lends nothing to the cooking process but it surprises nicely whan it doesn't break.
