Blackmail & AML

Blackmail & AML

Didn't find your answer?

If a solicitor has been engaged against me pursing allegations that his client tried to blackmail me for and which have been reported to the police how can I respond to the solicitor. Am I tipping off under AML if I say I cannot respond to allegations as the police have been informed of the allegations and your clients blackmail on the back of the allegations.

Also do I need do an AML report if it has been reported to police.

I can't see that the AML regulations apply to you here, any more than they would apply if you found a burglar in your house in the middle of the night.

If you are on the wrong end of a civil action being pursued by solicitors you need legal advice, which will take into account that there are, or may soon be, related criminal proceedings. That is a matter for lawyers not accountants.

Get legal advice
I would suggest you get legal advice from your own solicitor.
For the avoidance of doubt, you will not be committing a tipping-off offence by telling your solicitor everything.
