On contacting a young member of staff at the inland revenue, he stated that i cannot claim my business rental costs of £2000 for 8 months rent whilst in prison as i had "CEASED TRADING" How is that decided & is it correct? I could not sell the business & had no choice but to pay the rent. I have continued running the business on my release.Anyone know the answer ?

HMRC staff at call centres are not to be relied on.
It's a matter of fact.... Did you sell anything while in prison? What is the nature of your trade? Does the business rely on you ? Have you got staff? More facts are needed ?

Sounds dubious
The business is its own legal entity and continues to exist regardless of the status of the owner, even one enjoying a period at "Her Majesty's pleasure".
The business can only cease to exist if it is struck off the register at Companies House, provided this has not occurred, then it is still in existence.
What was the form of the company during your period in gaol? Did it employ other staff to keep it in operation? or was it just a one-man-band?
I still think HMRC are wrong, but need more information to directly phrase the argument.
Basically was it a sole trader/ partnership or a limited company and what is the nature of trade?
Shame - interesting question, I was interested in the answer
.. so he/she is unable to answer.
